Winter Recess/Recreo de Invierno
We have entered the colder season of the school year--I believe there is even a slight chance of snow in the 10-day forecast. I am writing to remind you that even though the temperatures get colder, our students still go outside for recess. We believe recess is a very important time for students to take a break from their academic classes to get fresh air, exercise, and socialize with their peers. Recess is so important that the Howard County Public School System has a policy requiring elementary schools provide students with 30 minutes of recess daily. We will follow the guideline that outdoor recess will occur during the cold months as long as the “feels like” temperature is at least 20 degrees and it is not raining/snowing.
Please be sure your children are prepared for outdoor recess. They should have coats/jackets, mittens/gloves, and hats. Doctors’ notes are required for students to miss recess. The note should list the dates the student cannot attend recess. If a doctor requires a student to stay in from recess when the rest of the students go out, the student will go to the front office until lunch.
Hour of Code
All studetns participated in coding over the past two weeks as part of Hour of Code. This internationally celebrated event was designed to get kids excited about coding and to raise awareness of the value of learning to code. At Deep Run Elementary, we encourage students to code at school and at home. There are many activities you can do at home to support your child’s coding interested. Visit https://hourofcode.com/us/learn for a searchable database with many available resources or check out Mrs. Wenzel’s coding website @ lwenzelcode.weebly.com
You should also visit your child’s Instructional Technology Canvas page and view the Hour of Code Announcement or Module about initiatives taking place at Deep Run…including prizes, certificates and raffles for STEM related prizes! To date, students at Deep Run have written 66,831 lines of code and several students have already completed the challenge of completing their assigned course!
PLEASE NOTE: Students must login via their code class (found via Canvas) to be eligible for certificates & prizes.
