Hanover Hills Elementary School

As you know, a new elementary school named Hanover Hills is opening in August and about 100 students from Deep Run will attend.  Students who live in our Jessup neighborhoods will attend Hanover Hills.  Today, these students will have an opportunity to vote for the school mascot.  The winner will be announced at the end of the school day.  There will be several activities to help the students transition to their new school including a family ice cream social to meet Mr. Todd, the principal at Hanover Hills.  Additionally there will be a parent meeting and the transitioning students will take a field trip to see the new school.  Our school counselors will be working with all the students at Deep Run as we prepare to say good-bye to the students going to Hanover Hills.  Please contact Mrs. Lancaster, Mr. Notari, or Mrs. Quirk if you have any questions.

Hoops for Heart

During the Month of March students in PE will focus on Healthy Habits as well as participate in a variety of basketball activities. We have teamed up again with the American Heart Association to help spread the importance of keeping a healthy heart. Students will be bringing home a letter this week that will give you information on how to team up with us on-line to spread the word.

If you would like to sign-up now click on the link Below

Our Hoops for Heart school wide event will take place on March 28th during each grade's related arts time slot. During that hour, students will partake in several basketball challenges. Please make sure your child has sneakers on that day.

Last year we had 125 students sign-up on line to take a Healthy Habit Challenge. This year our goal is to have 200 students sign-up. If we can reach this goal Mr. Sachs and Mr. Roeser will get ducked taped to the wall (Date to be determined). Along with taking on these Healthy Challenges we will be collecting donations for the American Heart Association. These proceeds are used by the American Heart Association to help fund research and education to help save lives. All collection envelopes and on-line donations are due by March 28th.

Journey School Picture Program--Pictures went home on  Tuesday

In Wednesday folders, parents received a special package of portraits from our photography partner Strawbridge Studios. They have designed a program called "Journey."  If your child attended Deep Run last year, you may remember receiving the Journey package.  Journey is a multi-year product that a majority of students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th geades will be receiving.  All other students should receive a Fun Variety Pack if they had fall pictures taken this year.  This could be the perfect gift to purchase for family and friends.  This is also an additional fundraiser for the school, so please keep this in mind when placing your order.  Thank you for your support.

Please review the pictures and decide which sheets you want to purchase.  Keep the ones you want and return the other photos with a check (for the sheets purchased) made out to Strawbridge Studios to school before Spring Break.

This year HCPSS will introduce a new online registration process.  Starting Thursday, March 1, you will find a link on the main HCPSS website to begin the online process. HOWEVER, you will still need to come in during Kindergarten registration week to complete the process.  Read more.

Security Procedures at Deep Run Elementary

Please follow the following security procedures when visiting Deep Run Elementary.  These procedures are aligned to HCPSS expectations:

· The front door is the only entrance point for all visitors.

· We ask that you buzz the front office and look in the camera.

· The office staff will ask you how they can help you and your purpose for visiting.

· All visitors then enter the front office with their identification.

· Each visitor will have their ID checked and sign in on LobbyGuard.

· A visitor’s sticker will be given to all visitors.

· Any visitor in our building without a sticker will be escorted directly back to the office by a staff member.

Our doors will remain locked for after school activities.  Leaders of the activities will bring students to the lobby for dismissal at the end of the program each day.

We appreciate you helping us provide a secure learning environment for your children.

Parking on Old Waterloo Road

We want to remind families to pay close attention to the signs on Old Waterloo Road including the entrance to Sherwood Crossing. In the coming weeks new signs will be put at the entrance to Sherwood Crossing to better identify the fire lanes. The Howard County Police Department will  enforce all no parking areas.  Read more in English and Spanish.

International Night--Families Needed

International Night is April 20 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Deep Run.  The event is richer, more informative, and better the more families we have sign up to bring food, perform in the showcase, set up a table display or bring a culturally significant game.  If you are able to participate in any of those please complete the form and have your child deliver it to their homeroom teacher.

Deep Run Learning Together Program

The Deep Run Regional Early Childhood Center (RECC) toddler and preschool programs are making preparations for classes for the 2018-19 school year.  These classes include children with and without disabilities.  The program’s focus is helping all children develop communication, literacy, math, problem solving, motor, and social skills.  Parents of children who will be 3 by September 1st or 4 years of age may pick up an application package in the front office.

All applications must be returned by the last Friday in March. A limited number of openings are available for children without disabilities.  Children are selected based upon screening information given on the application form and the “Ages and Stages Questionnaire,” as well as observations of the child’s participation in a playgroup.  If necessary, a lottery process is conducted.

If you have any questions, please contact Ruth Gibson at (410) 313-5000.
