We are Looking for Parent Mathematicians to Spotlight at DRES

Would You Be a Spotlighted Mathematician at DRES?
Help our students see how math is utilized in our community.
Do you have a job that involves a lot of math? Would you be willing to be a spotlighted mathematician during April Math Month? This would require completing the survey linked below and sending a picture to our math support teacher.  We want our students to see themselves as part of the community and to understand that mathematics is a powerful subject from parents' perspectives. DRES Parent Learning Series:  Math--April 1st

You are invited to participate in a special series to help your children excel at school and at home!  Come and learn how to support your child’s mathematical learning.  Attendees will engage in a problem solving task  and will learn multiple strategies for computation in primary and intermediate grades.   There will be an opportunity to explore apps and websites.

April 1st 9:30-10:30 (Spanish) and 2:30-3:30 (English)

Community Forum on Equitable and Effective Discipline Practices
 
Save the Date - Community Forum on Equitable and Effective Discipline Practices April 3:  The school community is welcome to attend a forum on equitable and effective student discipline practices, hosted by the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) in partnership with The Council of Elders, NAACP of Howard County, and the Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee. The forum will be held on Wednesday, April 3, at Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road in Columbia. Sign-in and networking begin at 6:15 p.m., followed by discussion from 6:30-8:15 p.m.
 
Fourth and Fifth Grade Musical:  Wright! Celebrate the Beginning of Flight
 
4th and 5th grade students have been working hard on the musical, Wright! Celebrate the Beginning of Flight.  Come to Deep Run on April 3rd to see the students perform the musical.  There are two show times with two different casts.  The first show is at 6:30 and the second is at 7:30. 
 
PTA Clothing Drive--Coming Soon!

The DRES PTA is sponsoring a children’s clothing drive to benefit members of the Deep Run community!  Please consider donating your CLEAN, gently used clothing that will be distributed to DRES families. We are in need of clothes for children of all ages!   Presorting clothes by size and gender will be GREATLY appreciated!!!! Collection boxes will be located at the front entrance of the school from April 23-May 1!!  Clothing distribution will take place on May 1st– More information coming soon!!

Special Education Citizen Advisory Council Educator Awards

SECAC Awards:  The SECAC (Special Education Citizens Advisory Council) Educator Awards are on May 1, 2019 from 7:00-8:30pm at River Hill HS. Every year, SECAC allows parents to nominate those staff members who have gone above and beyond in the supports they give for HCPSS students with disabilities. Parents/Guardians can nominate educators at SECAC Recognition Form 2019.

School Portrait Journey Program

A package of pictures was sent home with students last week.  The pictures include a sequence of portraits from each year your child has attended Deep Run.  Please review the portraits and price list.  Choose the sheets you wish to purchase.  Submit your payment in the envelope and return to school.  Return any portraits you do not want to purchase.  Please return payment and/or pictures by April 1st.

Long Reach High School:  Fiddler on the Roof

Long Reach High School Theatre presents Fiddler on the Roof March 21, 22 & 23 at 7 PM and Sunday, March 24 at 2 PM. In this classic musical, Tevye, a Jewish dairyman, tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Join us for this timeless tale with show-stopping numbers: "Sunrise, Sunset" & "Matchmaker" It's a ‘Tradition’ fit for the whole family!

Kindergarten Registration

Online registration is now open for the 2019-2020 school year! Online registrations can be finalized in person at school. 

Parents/guardians of children who will be five as of September 1, 2019 must enroll their children in kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year. Parents may begin the enrollment process online, followed by completion of the registration process at Deep Run Elementary. Online registration is not required and parents may elect to complete the full registration in person.

Friday, March 15th is the last day for walk in kindergarten registration between the hours of 9:30 am and 3:00 PM.   K registrations can be completed after March 15 by appointment only - please call 410-313-5000 if you need to schedule a time.

PreK Registration

Pre-K applications for 2019-2020 and processing will begin the week of March 18th.

Introducing Typing Agent

In today's digital age, HCPSS believes that teaching students to touch type is imperative. As students become keyboard proficient, this invaluable skill will help prepare them to become global citizens and obtain meaningful and rewarding employment in a dynamic, international workplace. With this in mind, we are excited to inform you that all students in grades 2-5 now have access to one of the most innovative typing tutors available -Typing Agent. Save the Date:  PTA Restaurant Night at Chipotle

Make dinner a selfless act by joining us for a fundraiser to support Deep Run Elementary School. Come in to the Chipotle at 6181 Old Dobbin Lane Ste. 100 in Columbia on Monday, March 25th between 5:00pm and 9:00pm. Bring in the flyer below or show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause to make sure that 33% of the proceeds will be donated to Deep Run Elementary School.

Dolly Parton Imagination Library

Deep Run has been selected to participate in Read with Me, a partnership between HCPSS, Bright Minds, the HC Early Childhood Advisory Council, and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

This program is for ANY baby or young child age 4 or under who lives in the Deep Run Elementary area. This includes your relatives and neighbors who live in the Deep Run area. Books will be mailed directly to your child.  If you would like to sign up, complete the form below--one form per child.  Contact Glenna Deekle at Deep Run with questions at 410-313-5000 or glenna_deekle@hcpss.org.

Reservoir High School Summer Sports Program

Looking for a fun and active camp this summer for your son and/or daughter?  Come out to Reservoir High School for Rankers Sports camp with Howard County teachers/coaches Phil Ranker (phys ed), Erika Lupo (phys ed) and Tom Dougherty (math).  We play many different sports throughout the week including: capture the football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, tseg ball, tag games, tennis, scooter games and many many more. If your child likes PE class, they will absolutely LOVE this camp.  Dates for camp: July 1-5 (no camp on July 4-prorated cost) and July 15-19.  Half day and full day options are available.  Please email phillip_ranker@hcpss.org or visit www.rankerssportscamp.weebly.com for any questions.
