Spelling Bee for 4th and 5th Graders

This year, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has developed an online testing platform that will allow Deep Run Elementary School to host a school spelling bee program for 4th and 5th graders.  In place of our traditional spelling bee program, we will hold one level of competition through online spelling tests. If you are interested in having your child compete in our Spelling Bee, please fill out the DRES Participation Confirmation Form, which includes instructions for registration and rules for participation. It must be completed by January 15th in order for your child to participate.

Once you have registered with the Scripps National Spelling Bee (directions and links are in the form above), Mrs. Owens will be able to assign the appropriate test to your child.  Your child must complete the test during our meet on January 20th. The meet will start promptly at 10:30.   The test can be taken on any device with a web browser, including desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smart phones. Please note, that the Scripps website allows for a practice test containing multiple choice questions, our test will require students to type their answers. The student with the highest score will represent Deep Run in the Howard County Library System regional spelling bee program on March 30th.

Please reach out to Mrs. Owens at audrey_owens@hcpss.org if you have any questions.

Telemedicine During Virtual Learning

On January 4, the School Based Wellness Centers (SBWC) Telemedicine Program will be reopening. The program will focus on children who do not have health insurance and/or a medical provider. Since the children and students are in their homes, we will not have the use of the telemedicine carts and will be unable to examine ears or perform throat cultures. Parents and guardians may call our office or send an email and program staff will determine if the health complaint can be safely evaluated and if not, assist them in finding a medical provider to see the child in person. There will be no charge for any of the SBWC Telemedicine visits. However, children must be enrolled or willing to enroll in the SBWC Program.
