PTA Meeting/Parent Connect--January 18th at 7pm
At the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Lancaster, Mrs. Quirk, and Mrs. Townsend met with each grade level team to review school system policies and procedures with students. The following topics will be reviewed this month as we prepare for the second half of the school year. Policies will be shared in a developmentally appropriate manner with grades K-5. You can learn more about HCPSS policies on the HCPSS Website. The Student and Parent Handbook also includes the information shared with the students.
We will remind students that toys should be left at home, including fidgets and poppers. We also explained that in elementary schools, cell phones need to be off and in backpacks during the school day.
The DRES Pet Supply Drive is being sponsored by our 3rd Grade Umoja Leaders Group in honor of the MLK Day of Service. Donation boxes are in each grade level pod area for students to donate supplies during the month of January. Supplies include used blankets, sheets, and towels, wet or dry food, new or used pet toys, bowls, or newspapers.
All donations will go to the Howard County Animal Control and Adoption Center.
Mayfield Woods Middle School Parent Information Night January 20th
Mayfield Woods Middle School is offering a virtual parent information night for 5th grade parents. The focus is on the overall transition to middle school and scheduling. Information about the Gifted and Talented program will begin at 5:30 and general information will begin at 6:30. Use your child's computer login, and join the google meet using the code: MWMSParentInformation.

Free Tax Preparation Services
MakingChange, Inc. partners with the Internal Revenue Service under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to offer free income tax preparation services for low-to-moderate income families, making $57,000 or less, who need assistance preparing their tax returns.
Participants in this virtual community academy on January 29th will learn about the most popular social media sites students are accessing and effective practices for keeping children safe when using social media.
This session is open to parents/guardians of students at all levels, and is free to attend.

This program is part of a series of workshops sponsored by HCPSS and The Council of Elders.
Kindergarten Registration Begins March 7th
Children must be 5 years old by September 1 in order to enroll in kindergarten. Every child who is 5 years old by September 1 must be enrolled in a kindergarten program this fall or have an approved waiver.
Masking at School
Mask Availability in Schools
KN 95 masks for grades 3-5 are available at school. KN 95 for primary students will be coming soon. While KN95 masks are recommended by the CDC and students may bring their own if they have them, they are not mandated. Students and staff will be permitted to use disposable or cloth masks. Disposable masks will continue to be available in schools for all students and staff. Masks will be given to students who arrive at school without a mask or if their mask is lost during the school day. Masks will also be given to students who have a mask that does not cover their nose and mouth.
Masking Expectations
CDC guidance for schools has not changed regarding removing masks while eating. Students and staff are permitted to remove their masks while eating or drinking, and are required to wear masks at all other times while indoors. Some students and staff have received medical exemptions for mask-wearing, which will continue to be granted.
Young Author's Contest
A few weeks ago a packet was sent home in all first through fifth graders’ Wednesday Folders. Please encourage your child to submit an original poem and/or short story. Attached is the explanation on what is required at each level and how to submit your child’s work. All entries are due by January 20th, 2022. Staff Appreciation Throughout the Year

Volunteer/Observer Vaccine Requirement
All volunteers and chaperones who interact with students, and parents/guardians who are conducting classroom observations will be required to use the PinPoint platform to show proof of full vaccination at least five school days in advance. Read more
Covid-19 Self Screenings
All parents/guardians are to perform a COVID-19 health check every day before your student leaves home. Students are not to come to school if they are experiencing any symptom(s) associated with COVID-19 or other communicable disease.
