News and Events

Rockin' Rangers School Store

Deep Run has a school store run by some of our 4th graders.  The store is open from 9:10-9:25 on Friday mornings.  Prices range from 10 cents to $2.50. Items are all school supplies-- erasers, pencils, pens, highlighters, folders, notepads, pencil cases, pencil sharpeners. There are also little coin pouches.  The store is located in our front lobby.

Quarterly Awards

Deep Run will continue to recognize students each quarter.  In addition to the whole school celebration for positive behaviors each quarter, students will also receive awards for exemplary report cards and for exemplary modeling of our school expectations of being engaged, kind and responsible.

Principals Award--awarded to students in 3-5 who earn all A's for grades and 1's for learning behaviors, and for students in K-2 who earn all I's for grades and 1's for learning behaviors.

Go for the Goal Award--one student from each class will be recognized for thier hard work, perseverance, helpfulness and kindness.

On Monday, November 25th a ceremony will be held at 9:25 to recognize all our award recipients.  Parents of the students receiving an award received a letter in last Wednesday's folder inviting them to the ceremony.

School Attendance As We Enter Cold and Flu Season

As we enter cold and flu season, please remember that regular, daily attendance is very important for learning and the overall success of your child at school.  Children are required to be in school every day school is in session unless the child has a fever or contagious illness. The Howard County Board of Education allows the following excused absences:  death in the family, illness, or religious obligation.  Deep Run's Student Services Team meets once a month to review student attendance.  The team reaches out to parents to ask about excessive absences, late arrivals and early dismissals and to offer assistance if needed.

If your child is sick (temperature greater than 100, vomiting, diarrhea more than 3 times) please keep them at home until they are fever free and vomit free for 24 hours WITHOUT MEDICATION. Students may attend school if they have occasional diarrhea. When in doubt, give our nurse’s office a call.

To help keep your children healthy, consider registering for our telemedicine program at Deep Run. Children can receive medical care while they are in school by using telemedicine technology. A secure, two way, real time video link is used to connect the school nurse and your child to either his or her medical provider or a Howard County General Pediatric Emergency Room physician. Parents must complete the enrollment forms for their children to receive services and the school nurse will call you before visits. If you have a smart phone or computer, you may participate in the visit and talk with the doctor. Telemedicine visits are free or cost the same as a regular office visit, depending on the child’s health provider.

Deep Run Hour of Code Week

Deep Run Elementary School would like to announce our participation in The Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week,  December 9-15, 2019.

We live in a world surrounded by technology and we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly hinge on understanding how technology works.  Computing makes up two-thirds of the projected new jobs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Our participation in The Hour of Code is a statement that Deep Run Elementary is ready to teach these foundational 21st century skills. We encourage you to visit https://code.org/ for more information and activities.

For more information feel free to contact Mrs. Stevens (rstevens@hcpss.org) or Mrs. Wenzel (lwenzel@hcpss.org).

Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on November 25th & 26th, and for some teachers on November 27th.  Fall conferences will be the traditional parent-teacher conference with homeroom teachers and February conferences will be the student-led conference. The HCPSS Connect/Family File account is used to schedule the conferences.  Beginning on Monday, November 11th you can log on to HCPSS Connect at www.hcpss.org/connect to access Synergy Conference Management. You can then choose your desired conference time from each teacher’s availability.  For assistance with scheduling your conferences, visit the user guide for detailed instructions.

For parents without online access, please contact our front office staff at 410-313-5000 for assistance in scheduling conferences. Please note that if you are unable to attend conferences during the conference days/evenings, please contact your child’s teacher directly to arrange a mutually convenient time.

Tips for Scheduling Conferences

  • Parent Teacher Conferences will be scheduled in 20-minute increments.

  • Conferences will need to begin and end on time.

  • Please allow yourself travel time between conferences within the building.

  • Please do not schedule back-to-back conferences with different teachers if at all possible.

  • Related Arts teachers have a limited number of conference times available in comparison to the number of students they teach. You are not required to schedule a related arts conference, however we encourage you to schedule a conference if you have a concern you would like to discuss with the teacher. If you would like to schedule a conference with a related arts teacher, please email the teacher to schedule with them directly.  Please visit our DRES staff page at https://dres.hcpss.org/school-staff for contact information.

  • If you do not have access to email, please call the front office.
