2nd Annual Toy Swap/Give Away--December 17th

The Deep Run Green School Committee will hold a gently used Toy Swap/Give-Away on December 17 from 5-7.   This is a great way to RECYCLE toys your children no longer use.  Toys can be dropped off at school beginning December 9th.  Please do not drop off large toys and bikes until December 16th.

Worth Repeating

Make Sure You are Receiving Communications from HCPSS and DRES

Mrs. Lancaster communicates with the school community weekly through the Deep Run Digest.  You should be receiving the Digest through email on Fridays at 7 am.  The Digest is also posted to the DRES Website on Thursday nights.  Additionally, the school sends out text messages with very important information as well as reminders of special events.

Teachers communicate using Canvas.  You can receive email notifications about announcements that have been posted on teacher's Canvas pages.

DRES Website

How to Receive Text Messages:

To comply with wireless carrier requirements, parents/guardians and community members must opt into receiving HCPSS text message alerts. Standard data fees and text messaging rates may apply based on your mobile plan. If you are unsure if you have already opted in, text the word “YES” to 67587 from the cell phone number on file in HCPSS Connect.

For community members without students in the school system, text the word “YES” to 67587 from the cell phone number that you signed up with.

Important Message from the Health Room--Lice

As we get into the school year, we will see LICE. It is part of school life. The health room is here to help! Here are some helpful tips and information regarding our favorite bugs.

· Lice are not harmful and cannot spread disease. They are just a nuisance!
· If you contract head lice it does not mean you are dirty. They actually prefer clean hair.
· If we find lice on your child in school, you will need to pick your child up and take them home for treatment. You can use over the counter lice killing shampoos to treat your child’s head. The most important part is PICKING OUT THE BUGS AND NITS.
· Treatment is only needed once and you can retreat in 7 days. DO NOT retreat sooner than 7 days.
· Check all members of the house. Only treat the people you find bugs or nits on.
· Please bring in the box of the shampoo you use to the health room with your child the following morning. We will reassess your child. If we see bugs, they will have to go home. Students can stay in school with nits.
· Nits will appear as dandruff. The difference is, nits are hard to move off the hair shaft. Dandruff can easily be blown or wiped away. A nit will need to be held on to and pulled off.
· Lice do not like to live off the human head. They begin to die as soon as they leave their host. The bugs transfer from head to head (hair to hair) contact. They do not travel on book bags and jackets.

Please feel free to contact the health room (410-313-5051) if you have any questions or think your child may have lice.

Collection for Grassroots

The Deep Run, Girls on the Run program, is collecting items for the Grassroots Shelter in Columbia, MD for our fall season service project. We will be collecting the following donations: winter clothes for children and adults (hats, gloves, scarves, jackets, socks, etc.) blankets, and canned food. Items will be collected in boxes around the school. We will be collecting donations from December 9th through January 17th. If you could please send these items in with your child or drop them off at school, it would be greatly appreciated!  Please contact Miss Hasson at Elizabeth_Hasson@hcpss.org with any questions!

Redistricting in Howard County

Deep Run is not affected by the redistricting.  Deep Run is not losing students and is not receiving students from another school.

Rockin' Rangers School Store

Deep Run has a school store run by some of our 4th graders.  The store is open from 9:10-9:25 on Friday mornings.  Prices range from 10 cents to $2.50. Items are all school supplies-- erasers, pencils, pens, highlighters, folders, notepads, pencil cases, pencil sharpeners. There are also little coin pouches.  The store is located in our front lobby.
